Dear Students/Counselors:

The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2008 HPRA Scholarship Program. The scholarship program was created to recognize outstanding undergraduate Hispanic students who are pursuing careers in public relations and related communications fields. Since its inception, the HPRA scholarship program has awarded more than $180,000 to Latino students pursuing a career in communications or related field.

In 2008, HPRA will award one $2,500 scholarship to an outstanding student. Nine other four-year university students will receive $1,000 each. As an added benefit, HPRA also is partnering with member companies and agencies to assist scholarship recipients in obtaining a public relations internship.

Eligibility and application requirements are outlined in the application. HPRA will notify scholarship recipients by September 2008. The postmark deadline to submit all materials is Friday, June 20, 2008.

HPRA’s objectives are to unite Hispanic practitioners for the purpose of exchanging ideas and experiences, to promote professional development through educational programs, to provide financial and internship assistance to students, and to advocate responsible coverage of issues and images affecting the Hispanic community.

History of HPRA

HPRA: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Like many other Hispanic professional organizations that came of age in the 1980's, the Hispanic Public Relations Association was established in 1984 by a group of Latino practitioners who believed that the creation of an organization dedicated to serving their specific needs and interests was the most effective way to promote professional advancement in the field. The first spark for the organization came from David Garcia, then with Fleishman-Hillard Public Relations, Garcia believed that other PR organizations' well-intentioned efforts to embrace multiculturalism were more geared to serving the needs of the organization than they were to Hispanic practitioners. Garcia initially discussed the idea with Myrna Gutierrez (El Centro Community Health Services) and John Echeveste (Southern California Association of Governments), who agreed and began working with him on plans to establish the organization. HPRA was founded in 1984 as a nonprofit organization to establish a network of Hispanics employed in the public relations profession in the Southern California area. HPRA has more than 150 members representing public relations, marketing and advertising professionals from agencies, government, non-profit and corporate companies. HPRA is dedicated to the advancement of Hispanic professionals and provides educational seminars and workshops throughout the year. HPRA also grants scholarships to Hispanic students attending Southern California universities and honors notable individuals in the communications field at its annual PRemio Awards.
